Full Immersion at Sherrills Ford ElementaryAt Sherrills Ford Elementary, kindergarten students will receive approximately 90% of instruction in Spanish and 10% in English to facilitate early Spanish language acquisition and literacy development. As students transition to higher grades, more of the instruction shifts to English as the photo to the right depicts.
(Percentages are approximate) While it may seem counterintuitive, research has demonstrated that immersion students score higher than their English-only counterparts on End of Grade (EOG) even without formal English instruction. |

Kindergarten Small Group Phonics Exercises
Señora Cappai's Spanish Immersion Kindergarten students practice their Spanish at Sherrills Ford Elementary. This is a 360 degree video so you can use your cursor or move your mobile phone around to view the entire classroom and all the students participating in the lesson!
In this video, you will see our outstanding kindergarten immersion teacher, Señora Cappai, play an engaging game with her students where she asks her students to read the syllables that she shows on the flashcards and then they reply with words that include the syllables they read. For example, the students read the syllable "gu" and say: "igual", "iguana" and although the correct way to separate the word in syllables is: i-gual or i-gua-na, the students complied with the instructions to say words that include "gu" in them.
This is just one of many different games or strategies that our teachers use to teach our students the curriculum!
