Full Immersion at Startown ElementaryAt Startown Elementary, kindergarten students will receive approximately 90% of instruction in Spanish and 10% in English to facilitate early Spanish language acquisition and literacy development. As students transition to higher grades, more of the instruction shifts to English as the photo to the right depicts.
(Percentages are approximate) While it may seem counterintuitive, research has demonstrated that immersion students score higher than their English-only counterparts on End of Grade (EOG) even without formal English instruction. |

“As a parent who has previously had three children go through elementary school, I have been truly impressed with the dual language program. I tell everyone about it. The teacher has been amazing and so organized. It is very clear what the child needs to be working on and as parents, how we can help at home. The teacher is so engaging to the students. My daughter has flourished so much in this program that she is now speaking Spanish to us....This truly has been a learning experience for the whole family and I am so glad that I made the decision to put our child in this amazing program.”
“My child loves the DLI program, and comes home everyday singing Spanish songs. She teaches her older brother Spanish words, enjoys showing others how much she’s learned, and even picks up Spanish vocabulary words in others’ conversations. It has been amazing to watch my daughter learn another language; speaking, writing, and reading, with such confidence. I am very grateful for this program, and look forward to watching her grow and gain even more confidence.”
“Being part of the inaugural dual language immersion class has been a wonderful experience for our son. In just a little over 5 months, he has already started integrating what he has learned into everyday life. From a simple greeting when we pick him up from school to full sentences when he is describing his day, we never expected that he would pick up so much in such a short amount of time. We cannot speak highly enough of Startown's DLI Kindergarten teacher. She has been very patient with the students and us through this process so far and we know she has been the difference maker in having made this a successful year.”
